Diwali Celebration - 2025
(Oct 18 - Oct 20 )

Diwali, also called Deepavali, is India's biggest and most important festival. It's named after the row of clay lamps that people light outside their homes to represent inner light protecting against spiritual darkness. This celebration comes from the Sanskrit word "dipavali," which means "row of lights," and it is particularly linked to Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity. The festival is famous for the bright clay lamps that decorate homes during this special time.
Dhanteras puja takes place in the beginning of Diwali which denotes wealth and success in homes of the devotees. Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshipped together with Lord Kubera. Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the beginning of the festivities.
The second day of Diwali, called Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali, commemorates Krishna's destruction of Narakasura, prayers are also offered for the souls of ancestors.
The third day of Diwali is Lakshmi Puja and the darkest night of the traditional month. It is the main day of the festival. Lakshmi
is the goddess of wealth. The Lakshmi puja is performed in the evening to invite Goddess Lakshmi at home. People pray and wish for
peace, wealth and prosperity.
After Lakshmi Puja, the day is celebrated differently, in some places, it's known as Govardhan Puja and Balipratipada (Padwa).
Another significant day is Bhai Dooj, dedicated to the bond between sisters and brothers. Hindu and Sikh craftsmen communities
observe Vishvakarma Puja on this day, maintaining their workspaces and offering prayers.
The Hindu Temple of Tallahassee Governing Body cordially invites you along with your family and friends to the Diwali celebrations. The celebrations will be held in accordance with Hindu rituals from Oct 18 through Oct 20, 2025.
